Backup – A duplicate of information as a preventative measure against its potential loss or data that is done regularly by many computer users. Many organizations also utilize automatic backup software that regularly stores data.
Backup Tapes – Tape media used to backup data.
Backup Tape Recycling – The act in which old backup tapes are overwritten with new data.
Bandwidth – The quantity of information that can be sent over a network in a certain amount of time.
Bates Production Number – A number that is assigned to each page of a document that has been produced to assist in tracking the document.
Binary – A number system used for digital computing that has two unique numbers comprised of zero and one.
Bit – The smallest unit of data that can be measured that is either the one or zero element of the binary code.
Bit Stream Backup – Bit stream backups, also referred to as mirror image backups, are comprised of the backup of all areas of a computer hard disk drive or another type of storage media, e.g., Zip disks, floppy disks, Jazz disks, etc. Such backups exactly replicate all sectors on a given storage device, therefore, all files and ambient data storage areas are copied.
Burn – The process of a creating a copy of information onto a CD-ROM.
Byte – A unit of measure consisting of eight bits that is the basic measurement of most computer data as multiples of the byte value. One million bytes are equivalent to a "megabyte" while one billion bytes is a "gigabyte".
